This is the last issue for the Midnighter and Apollo 6-issue mini series from DC Comics. This was a great series and I am saddened to see the end of the series. This was written by Steve Orlando and illustrated by Fernando Blanco.

Midnighter finally makes it into hell and reaches his boyfriend Apollo. But he has to defeat hell itself, which is the embodiment of Neron. This is an epic fight between Midnighter and Neron that has a very bittersweet ending.

Apollo was killed by Mawzir and taken to hell by Neron. That’s bad for hell, because Midnighter fights his way to his boyfriend’s side. It’s a bloody battle, but he does his thing and gets there! Badass 4th issue and I am loving Steve Orlando’s writing.

The third issue to Midnighter and Apollo’s mini series is out. To recap- Apollo is in hell and being held by Neron. Midnighter is fighting his way into hell to get his boyfriend back. It is as tough as it sounds. Great read! Written by Steve Orlando and drawn by Fernando Blanco.

The second issue to Midnighter and Apollo is out. Last we left our heroes, Apollo was killed and dragged to hell. Now Midnighter has to find a way to get to his boyfriend and save him. The irony of two heroes going to hell is not lost on me. This is a great issue, and so far I cannot wait to see how Midnighter saves his partner.

Midnighter and Apollo are back for a mini series to close up some story elements that were left hanging from Midnighter’s solo series that recently ended. Midnighter is chasing after the man who experimented on him, Henry Bendix while Apollo is taking a trip to an alternate dimension where he may not return. Great first issue!

Midnighter had a solo series for a year and was the first gay male to his own a mainstream comic book. Unfortunately because of low sales, despite an excellent story written by Steve Orlando, his series did not make it through DC’s Rebirth. Luckily though he will be having his own mini-series with his long time partner Apollo and will be written by Orlando again. He stated:

“MIDNIGHTER AND APOLLO is the book we need right now, as comics’ most iconic queer couple face down a new enemy and show us that we can never give in to fear, hatred, and evil,” says Orlando. “And they do it with their own brand of action movie wit… and punching. I won’t just deliver fans the much-anticipated return of Apollo. I’ll also feature the Lords of the Gun and the iconic Mawzir from DC’s seminal Hitman, as well as Underworld Unleashed’s Neron. And that’s just the beginning. It’s a knockdown, drag out, DC Universe western revenge thriller that starts kicking from page one!”

I think the preview released looks excellent. And can we just appreciate Midnighter’s costume? I think it is time I costume as a gay superhero character and Midnighter would be a great one. I know this is just a small series and sales probably will not be that great even still, but I will definitely support this endeavor. Issue number 1 will be released on October 5 by DC Comics.

Mid and Ap

With the Rebirth of DC Comics currently taking place, Midnighter and his on again/off again boyfriend Apollo, have been missing, until now. A new mini series with Midnighter and Apollo will be starting in October 2016. This is excellent news. Midnighter’s last series had him as a solo hero discovery and tracking down tech that had clues to his mysterious origin while dating other men but ended with him being reunited with his long time companion. The New York Times reports that series writer, Steve Orlando stated: “They have a firmer idea of who they are, and they’ve become stronger and more confident together.”

Stormwatch

For those unaware, Midnighter is a gay comic book superhero that was introduced in 1998 in Wildstorm Comics, which is part of DC Comics. His past includes him being experimented on that gave him superhuman abilities including strength, reflexes, and speed. More so, he also has a type of supercomputer brain that can predict numerous outcomes to scenarios that allows him to formulate the most precise course of action to take. He has appeared in several team based books, including Stormwatch and the Authority. His year long ongoing series was written by Steve Orlando with various artists. This was incredibly well written. His sexuality was up front and perfectly made clear just as any other superheroes’ sexuality has been shown in other books but his story was still focused on an adventurous superhero comic book level. Unfortunately it was cancelled because of low sales. Midnighter dated men and he was shown to be a total badass in every way imaginable. Even teaming up with Agent Dick Grayson briefly to almost tease gay readers into thinking that there was something else that has happened between these characters on panel or in their own past. The year long story did have closure but left it open for new adventures to continue on.

Midnight and Apoll

Currently no gay male lead an ongoing mainstream comic book title. This may just be a mini series, but it is something. Fans constantly remark that new characters need to be built up that are representative of the LGBT community rather than to change established characters sexuality. This is a chance for that to happen. Midnighter and Apollo are established, though still relatively unknown outside of comic book fans. In order for characters to be more prominent and shown up front and center, fans have to want to read these comic books and to help them up. Otherwise the characters will be forgotten and the same problem will continue to linger with the lack of any gay characters being present.

Midnighter 12 (4).Movie_Snapshot

This is the last of the Midnighter comic books in the foreseeable future from DC Comics. So sad, especially since there are very few LGBT characters that are headlining their own series. This comic has a satisfying conclusion but it is still sad to see it go. Hopefully his character will not be in limbo forever and he can join a new Stormwatch team or maybe be a Bat-Person family member. Anything is possible.

The Midnighter series is coming to a close. We have the return of Midnighter’s long time boyfriend in this issue and he is definitely going to stick around to the end of this story arc.
